LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. - An 81-year-old boater was in critical condition Thursday after a stingray flopped onto his boat and stabbed him, leaving a foot-long barb in his chest, authorities said.
"It was a freak accident," said Lighthouse Point acting fire Chief David Donzella. "It's very odd that the thing jumped out of the water and stung him. We still can't believe it."
Fatal stingray attacks like the one that killed "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin last month are rare, marine experts say. Rays reflexively deploy a sharp spine in their tails when frightened, but the venom coating the barb usually causes just a painful sting for humans.
James Bertakis of Lighthouse Point was on the water with his granddaughter and a friend Wednesday when the stingray flopped onto the boat and stung Bertakis. The women steered the boat to shore and called 911.
Surgeons were able to remove some of the barb, and Bertakis, who also suffered a collapsed lung, underwent surgery late Wednesday and early Thursday, the Miami Herald reported on its web site.
Ellen Pikitch, a professor of marine biology and fisheries at the University of Miami, who has been studying stingrays for decades, said they are generally docile.
"Something like this is really, really extraordinarily rare," she said. "Even when they are under duress, they don't usually attack."

so yesterday i got hit by a car while bikin on campus near university ave. i only have one bruise, because they were going slow, but still. its a pretty awesome bruise. and my bikes okay so i mean, i'm okay. the man who was driving's wife looked horrified. i bet he's not gonna get laid for a few days.
tonight i am going to jacksonville to see ok go. after i finish a ten page paper about beethoven and time travel. don't ask.

ps. and this one time i had my window in my bedroom open and a classy looking couple stepped out of a bmw. the pretty lady proceeded to say, "omigod. what the fuck! look at that fucking car! they have like...a voodoo doll..hanging inside! omigod. what the fuck!they must be like...a voodoo person!"
i think this should teach everyone a lesson. if you talk about someone (or their car decor), there is a distinct possibility that they are listening to you 5 feet away with their bedroom window open.

i was reading this article about this group that made this music video to be sent out to schools featuring sponge bob and miss piggy and oscar the grouch et al, anyway it was about promoting diversity (including homosexuality, shock shock shock!!) and all that jazz, and the group who is doing the video had the best quote ever,

two livejournals in one day oooh what an internet fucking addict,
i just wanted to say that me and sarah have decided to move , the decision came after we talked and realized that with the money we could save on living somewhere else, we could probably buy a new pair of diesel jeans every month. fucking x-treme, you know? we are thinking somewhere closer to downtown, we're going to go do a drive-around on saturday. our lease ends in august and we can not wait.

nothin like an getting an "A+excellent!" 10-page paper back at 830am to really jump-start your morning, especially when said paper was writtern at a blinding speed and total lack of listening to 7 days of NPR classical music, which was the point of the assignment. ilu, MUL2010.
now i am going to maude's to study for my afternoon spanish test, one which will surely do me wrong.
i am travelling by car, due to the "i can't feel my hands" sitaution going on outside when i ride my bicycle. stupid florida. get warm.
